National standards of teaching:
Professional engagement standard 7
I believe it is vital to always engage colleagues, students, parents, carers and the community in a professional and friendly manner. As a graduate teacher I will need to be fully aware of all the sub-standards in regards to this, however as a current student I have only experienced engaging with colleagues and the community. In spite of this, I look forward to gaining further opportunities to improve my professional development skills with these groups. To help me implement a professional approach I will ensure to review individual school policies for legal obligations and ethics.
During my time at ACU I have gained in depth knowledge of sub-standards 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 and 7.4. I have also used these standards in teaching vocal lessons outside of school with community drama and theatre students, while engaging with parents in student’s individual performance needs (Professional Development Plan photo, Junior Squids 2013).
I have also been heavily involved in community musical theatre and have just finished performing in the Phantom of the Opera with Redcliffe Musical Theatre. This show required a lot of professional practice and professional communication with the cast and its sponsors as I was working with a wide range of academic and professional people in their specialised fields of music. During this time I gained the opportunity to teach vocalists new techniques in opera singing, thereby enabling me to better my teaching methods and professional communication. After this experience I felt more confident in approaching people in a professional manner, however more importantly, reminded me why I want to become a teacher. I believe that I have addressed these standards in my community work but I am still continuing to develop in my practice to address these standards in teaching in a school environment, not just out in the community.
